Quick Answer#
The GemCam can capture top-down shots when paired with the GemLightbox Pro. It can also photograph larger jewelry pieces, though very large items may not fit completely within a single frame — the GemCam is a macro camera built for close-up detail. The minimum focal distance of 2–5.5 in (7–14 cm) always applies.
Before You Start#
Confirm your GemCam is set up and connected.
Top-down shooting requires the GemLightbox Pro — it is not supported on other GemLightbox models.
For large pieces, check whether the item fits within the GemCam's focal range before shooting.
Steps#
Shoot a Top-Down Angle#
Confirm the GemCam lenses are straight and properly aligned.
Open the cover at the top of the GemLightbox Pro.
Gently lower the GemCam through the top opening until the subject comes into focus.
Adjust brightness in the app to suit the jewelry type.
Note: The focal distance of 2–5.5 in (7–14 cm) between the GemCam lens and the subject still applies when shooting top-down.
Photograph a Large Jewelry Piece#
Place the jewelry inside the GemLightbox Pro.
If the piece does not fit within the standard frame, remove the front cover of the GemLightbox Pro to expand the viewing area.
Keep the GemCam within 2–5.5 in (7–14 cm) of the jewelry.
Adjust brightness and position until the piece is clearly in focus.
If the piece is still too large to capture completely: Switch to the GemIQ on your smartphone. The phone camera provides a wider field of view better suited to larger pieces.
Expected Result#
Top-down: The jewelry appears sharp and in focus from directly above, with accurate color and brightness.
Large pieces: As much of the piece as possible appears within frame at the correct focal distance. Very large items may still require multiple shots to capture fully.
If This Does Not Work#
Image is blurry: Verify the GemCam is within 2–5.5 in (7–14 cm) of the subject. Adjust the distance until focus locks.
Piece is too large for the frame: Remove the GemLightbox Pro front cover and try again. If the piece still does not fit, use the GemIQ.
GemCam will not fit through the top opening: Make sure the GemLightbox Pro lid is fully open and the GemCam lenses are aligned straight before inserting.
Common Mistakes#
Attempting top-down shooting with a standard GemLightbox — this technique requires the GemLightbox Pro.
Shooting outside the 2–5.5 in (7–14 cm) focal distance, which causes blurry results.
Expecting the GemCam to capture very large pieces in full — it is a macro camera designed for close-up detail, not wide-angle shots.
