How to Shoot Top-Down Angles and Large Jewelry Pieces with GemCam

Quick Answer

The GemCam can capture top-down shots when paired with the GemLightbox Pro. It can also photograph larger jewelry pieces, though very large items may not fit completely within a single frame — the GemCam is a macro camera built for close-up detail. The minimum focal distance of 2–5.5 in (7–14 cm) always applies.

Before You Start

  • Confirm your GemCam is set up and connected.

  • Top-down shooting requires the GemLightbox Pro — it is not supported on other GemLightbox models.

  • For large pieces, check whether the item fits within the GemCam's focal range before shooting.

Steps

Shoot a Top-Down Angle

  1. Confirm the GemCam lenses are straight and properly aligned.

  2. Open the cover at the top of the GemLightbox Pro.

  3. Gently lower the GemCam through the top opening until the subject comes into focus.

  4. Adjust brightness in the app to suit the jewelry type.

Note: The focal distance of 2–5.5 in (7–14 cm) between the GemCam lens and the subject still applies when shooting top-down.

Photograph a Large Jewelry Piece

  1. Place the jewelry inside the GemLightbox Pro.

  2. If the piece does not fit within the standard frame, remove the front cover of the GemLightbox Pro to expand the viewing area.

  3. Keep the GemCam within 2–5.5 in (7–14 cm) of the jewelry.
