Unlike diamonds and faceted gemstones, pearls are prized for their soft luster, also known as orient. This delicate glow comes from light reflecting and refracting through the pearl's layers, creating a subtle radiance rather than brilliant sparkle.

Because of this, pearls respond best to soft, diffused lighting.

Using additional sparkle lighting or strong directional light can:

  • Create harsh reflections on the pearl's surface.

  • Reduce the visibility of its natural luster.

  • Wash out subtle color variations.

  • Make the pearl appear overly bright or flat.
